SPGA and Absa Unite to Restore Coral Reefs in Ste. Anne Marine Park

On Saturday, 4th July, the Seychelles Parks and Gardens Authority (SPGA) and Absa Seychelles came together for a significant coral reef restoration initiative in Ste. Anne Marine Park. Building on a partnership formalised in 2024, this was the third collaborative activity of its kind, underscoring the shared commitment to marine conservation.

During the exercise, 1,207 coral fragments were carefully out planted onto structures made from recycled fish traps. These traps, previously confiscated within the park, were repurposed to give new life to degraded reef areas. Following a detailed briefing from the SPGA team, Absa volunteers assisted in carefully placing and securing the coral fragments onto the structures, which were then secured by SPGA’s Marine Operations dive team.

The restoration highlights the importance of maintaining healthy reef systems, particularly within marine parks that safeguard biodiversity and strengthen ocean resilience. Speaking on the occasion, the SPGA CEO, Mr. Rodney Bonne noted that: “This collaboration reflects our shared commitment to sustainability and climate action. Each restoration effort is more than just science, it is a powerful step towards resilience in the face of climate change. I extend my heartfelt thanks to the Absa team for standing shoulder to shoulder with us in this mission. Together, we are proving that when stakeholders and conservation unite, we can restore not only our reefs, but also build towards a more sustainable future."

Beyond their immediate ecological benefits, such restoration activities play a vital role in addressing the challenge of climate change. Healthy coral reefs act as natural barriers, while also supporting fisheries and tourism that sustain our economy. By restoring degraded reef areas, SPGA and its partners are contributing to both mitigation and adaptation of climate change, helping these ecosystems build resilience against its effects.

This initiative not only reinforces SPGA’s commitment and leadership in marine conservation but also demonstrates the power of public‑private partnerships in advancing conservation goals.

This initiative not only reinforces Seychelles’ leadership in marine stewardship but also demonstrates the power of public‑private partnerships in advancing conservation goals. Ste. Anne Marine Park, the oldest marine park in Seychelles, stands as a symbol of resilience and thriving biodiversity. Its continued vitality, strengthened through restoration efforts like this, reflects the enduring importance of stewardship and collaboration in safeguarding the nation’s natural heritage.
