Botanical Garden Welcomes Prime Minister Modi During Independence Celebrations
As Seychelles marked the historic milestone of its 50th Independence Anniversary, SPGA was honoured to host the Prime Minister of the Republic of India, His Excellency Shri Narendra Modi, at the Botanical Gardens. The visit, led by the President of the Republic of Seychelles, H.E Dr. Patrick Herminie, reflected the deep and enduring friendship between the two countries.
Prime Minister Modi was warmly received by the Minister for Environment, Climate Change and Natural Resources, Ms. Marie May Jeremie; SPGA CEO, Mr. Rodney Bonne; Deputy CEO, Ms. Lya Docteur; and the Garden General Manager, Mrs. Nathachia Einfeldt.
The tour began at the Giant Tortoise Enclosure, where both leaders were briefed on the Aldabra giant tortoises — one of Seychelles’ most treasured national symbols. The moment was made even more memorable as the dignitaries fed the tortoises.
Prime Minister Modi was also introduced to the world-renowned endemic Coco de Mer Palm. In a gesture of friendship and continuity, Prime Minister Modi planted a Coco de Mer tree, signifying the strength and longevity of the bilateral relationship between Seychelles and India.
This symbolic act underscored the shared commitment of both nations to environmental stewardship, cultural exchange, and mutual respect. The visit not only celebrated Seychelles’ independence but also reaffirmed the enduring partnership between the two countries.
