Strengthening Regional Collaboration for Our MPAs

From 20 to 27 February 2026, the Seychelles Parks and Gardens Authority (SPGA) is taking part in a regional strategic enforcement exchange dedicated to strengthening the protection and management of Marine Protected Areas across the Western Indian Ocean, being held in Mombasa, Kenya. Representing Seychelles, SPGA’s Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Allen Cedras, and Inspector Andrew Sinon of the Seychelles Police Force are actively contributing to discussions and training sessions that highlight the use of innovative technologies such as Earth Ranger and Skylight. These tools are designed to improve monitoring efficiency, enhance enforcement, and ensure long-term management effectiveness of marine ecosystems.

The exchange has brought together participants from Seychelles, Mauritius, Madagascar, Comoros, Mozambique, South Africa, Tanzania, Zanzibar, and Kenya. It provides a valuable platform for sharing experiences, building capacity, and fostering collaboration among enforcement agencies and conservation authorities. By learning from one another and adopting new approaches, participants are strengthening regional solidarity and ensuring that lessons learned in one country can benefit others facing similar challenges.

For Seychelles, the workshop underscores the importance of the strong partnership between SPGA and the Marine Police. Joint patrols, coordinated enforcement, and shared intelligence have long been central to safeguarding the nation’s marine heritage. This collaboration ensures that illegal activities are deterred and biodiversity is preserved, while also reinforcing Seychelles’ leadership in marine conservation and ocean governance.
