Celebrating Women in Science - Shazelle Julie

As we continue to recognise the incredible women in Science within the Authority, we celebrate our Assistant Park Officer; Shazelle Julie, who plays an important role in safeguarding Seychelles’ oldest marine protected area, all while inspiring the next generation of ocean stewards

What first inspired you to pursue a career in science and conservation?

My love for marine life is a generational passion passed down to me by my father. It feels only natural to pursue a career in conservation and use science to better understand and protect these incredible ecosystems.

What challenges did you face as a woman entering the scientific field, and how did you overcome them?

Because the field is largely male-driven, opportunities can be highly competitive, making it challenging at times to secure roles and progress. I have overcome most challenges through hard work. I have also embraced numerous opportunities for growth through networking and training.

Could you share some highlights of your current work at SPGA?

As Assistant Park Officer, I am at the forefront of marine science and conservation in the Sainte Anne Marine Park. Currently, I have been entrusted with leading the prestigious Green List pathway initiative for the Park, which addresses strengthening governance and ecological integrity.

I am also part of the team who manages the EarthRanger Operations Centre, where technology supports real-time monitoring and decision-making. I have been able to contribute towards implementing fish monitoring programs, and conducting fish identification trainings to enhance scientific understanding among staff colleagues.

What scientific achievement or project are you most proud of so far?

During my time at SPGA, my primary contributions have focused on implementing fish monitoring programs and conducting fish identification training.

What does the International Day of Women and Girls in Science mean to you personally?

It celebrates the contributions women and girls have made towards science, while showcasing our resilience, strength, and capacity to lead and innovate. Women have become more visible and influential, inspiring change both locally and globally.

What advice would you give to young girls?

To every young girl, stay curious and never stop asking questions. Believe in your abilities and pursue your dreams with courage. If you stumble or fail, stand back up and try again.

What legacy would you like your work to leave for future generations of women in science?

I want to demonstrate that with determination and belief in yourself, anything is possible. The world is filled with endless opportunities, and I hope women are reminded of their strength and are inspired by the impact I aspire to make.
