King’s Baton Relay Celebrates Marine Conservation at Baie Ternay Marine Park

On its global journey through 74 Commonwealth nations and territories ahead of the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, the King’s Baton Relay made a meaningful stop in Seychelles—bringing a message of environmental stewardship to the shores of Baie Ternay Marine Park.

The event, held in partnership with the British High Commission, highlighted the continued need to preserve our unique marine ecosystems and also showcased the beauty of the Marine Park, as well as the dedication of our team who protects it.

British High Commissioner Jeff Glekin, originally from Glasgow, led the activity by kayaking with the baton through the pristine waters of the park. “This is a country with a deep connection to the ocean, and it’s inspiring to see how seriously that responsibility is taken. Hosting the baton in today’s activity was a privilege, and I hope it encourages more conversation and action, both locally and across the Commonwealth.”

Baie Ternay, Park Officer, Mr. Roland Quatre, emphasized the importance of linking local conservation efforts to global challenges. “Baie Ternay is more than a beautiful location; it’s a living example of what we stand to lose if we don’t act. Welcoming the baton here is a chance to show how local conservation efforts connect to global challenges. It’s encouraging to see this kind of awareness being shared across the Commonwealth.”

In a moment of pride and symbolism, SPGA’s park officers and rangers also had the honour of holding the baton—recognizing their frontline role in safeguarding Seychelles’ marine parks and biodiversity, reinforcing the message of ocean protection and offering a moment of reflection on the importance of preserving these ecosystems for future generations.

SPGA is proud to have played a part in this inspiring journey, and remains committed to raising awareness, fostering partnerships, and taking action to protect Seychelles’ marine environment.
